The Scary Noise Storybook

Updated: Nov 10

A picture of the front page of the storybook, The Scary Noise. Pedro the Bat and Robbie the Robbie look startled.

Storyline

The Scary Noise is set in the creatures’ bedroom. Robbie is awoken by a scary noise and is too afraid to leave the room. His friend, Pedro, suggests what is making the scary noise. This makes Robbie more scared of what is lurking behind the bedroom door.

The four main characters are Robbie the Robin, Pedro the Bat, Claws the Lobster and Bubbles the Octopus. They each have their own interpretation of The Scary Noise. Their emotions, actions and reactions are all different. This underpins how each character has distinct personalities, histories and experiences, just like our children.

Like the creatures, children learn how to overcome the trials and tribulations of growing up. This includes how they make friends, and how to interact with friends, and how friends will behave towards them.

Robbie the Robin

Robbie falls out of bed when The Scary Noise wakes him up. He doesn’t know what is causing the noise, and becomes more hysterical as he listens to Pedro’s suggestions. The situation becomes more dramatic as he is influenced by Pedro. Robbie allows fear to take over.

Something changes in Robbie when he says ‘I need to pull myself together’. Robbie pulls from his deep reserve and finds courage to face the situation, even though he doesn’t want to. Towards the end of the story, Robbie sits on the bed and waits for the source of The Scary Noise to enter the room. He is facing fear head on. This is a scene of great anticipation.

Pedro the Bat

Robbie the Robin falls out of bed, startled by The Scary Noise. Pedro the Bat flies away as a first response to the sudden scary noise

Pedro loves reminiscing and talking about when he lived in 'the castle'. For Pedro, it is quite logical to think that a monster or a ghost is causing The Scary Noise. But Pedro doesn't realise that he is upsetting Robbie and busies himself finding solutions.

Pedro the Bat is imagining the monster from the castle, and scaring Robbie the Robin with his story

Claws the Lobster

Robbie the Robin is shouting 'Wake up Claws!' to his friend Claws the Lobster

Claws sleeps through most of the commotion, until Robbie finally wakes him up. Claws sizes up the situation immediately and asks ‘Where’s Bubbles?’ Claws could have stepped in to stop the hysteria, but instead watched with quiet amusement and disdain. Perhaps he didn’t appreciate being woken up so abruptly!
